· Free, with retiring collection

Choral Evensong with the Lichfield Quires Visiting Choir.

An hour of sung evensong on a still Wednesday in late June, with music by Howells, Stanford, Tomkins and a new setting commissioned from the Lichfield-born composer Helen Whitley. The retiring collection will be added in full to the south aisle roof appeal.

Choral Evensong at St Margaret's, Great Barr: the Lichfield Quires Visiting Choir in cassocks and surplices, candles in tall brass sticks.

About the evening

The Lichfield Quires Visiting Choir is a touring scratch chamber choir drawn from the cathedral and parish choirs of the Lichfield diocese. They have visited St Margaret's once or twice a year since 2014, and we have come to know them well. The June 2026 evensong will mark their twelfth visit to the parish and the fourth under the direction of Helen Whitley, who took over the choir in 2022.

The Order of Service follows the Book of Common Prayer (1662): Preces and Responses (Tomkins), the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis from Stanford in C, an anthem by Howells ('Like as the hart'), and a short new setting by Helen Whitley of words from George Herbert's Love (III). The whole service runs to about fifty-five minutes. Two hymns are sung by the congregation.

What to bring

Nothing in particular. Order of service papers will be provided at the door. The church will be a little cool — a cardigan is a sensible suggestion. If you are reserving a place and you would like to make the modest retiring collection by card rather than cash, please let us know in the form below and we will keep an iZettle reader near the door.

Accessibility

The south porch is the main entrance and is step-free. There is one further step into the nave; a portable ramp is available — please ask at the porch. The first three pews on the south side are reserved for wheelchair users and their companions. A hearing loop covers the whole nave. There is no parking on site; the nearest accessible parking is on Newton Road, immediately outside the lych-gate (twelve spaces, free of charge after 18.00).

Reservations

Reservation is not strictly necessary for evensong — visitors are very welcome to walk in — but if you let us know you are coming, we can hold a pew for you and we know how many orders of service to print. Please use the form on the right.

Visiting from elsewhere

If you are coming from outside the parish, a small printed map of where to park and how to reach the south porch is available on the resources page.
